Operating since the late 1950s, Rutherford Street Kindergarten has a long history of providing early childhood education and care for tamariki living in Nelson city and the surrounding suburbs. We are a small, welcoming, community-based and not-for-profit centre, licensed for up to 32 children aged two to six years. Our kindergarten is governed by a dedicated Board made up of parents, whānau and community members.

At Rutherford Street Kindergarten | Te Puna Kōhungahunga o Piki Mai, tamariki learn through play in a warm and nurturing environment guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum. Our experienced teaching team values strong, respectful relationships with tamariki and whānau, creating a place where children feel known, supported and confident to explore.

As a smaller centre, we are able to get to know each tamaiti as an individual and work closely with their whānau to support their learning, wellbeing and sense of belonging. Our well-loved indoor and outdoor spaces provide opportunities for creativity, active play, friendships, problem-solving and connection with the natural world.

We are centrally located with our own carpark and offer flexible attendance options and a low hourly rate for families.
